Dave Portnoy could not believe the San Antonio Spurs had moved ahead of the New York Knicks as title favorites while Game 4 of the NBA Finals was still unfolding.
The reaction came with the Knicks watching their early series control disappear in real time. New York won the first two games in San Antonio, but the Spurs answered in Game 3 and then delivered a brutal first half at Madison Square Garden.

For Portnoy, the odds shift felt like a massive overreaction and a sign of disrespect toward a Knicks team still trying to protect its historic position.

Dave Portnoy calls San Antonio Spurs NBA title odds disrespectful to Knicks
Dave Portnoy on X reacted after the Spurs moved into position as favorites to win the NBA title over the Knicks.
“The Spurs are now favored to win the title. That’s insane. Total disrespect to the Knicks. Keep in mind no team has ever won the 1st 2 on the road and lost the NBA Finals,” Portnoy tweeted.
He added, “And you’re telling me the Spurs are now favored? I refuse to believe the Knicks choke this away.”

Portnoy’s point was rooted in history. Winning the first two games of the Finals on the road usually puts a team in command, and the Knicks had already done the hardest part by stunning San Antonio twice.
The problem is that the series has not looked the same since it returned to New York.
San Antonio Spurs odds swing after New York Knicks fall apart in Game 4
The reason the market flipped was not subtle. The Knicks are down 76-49 at halftime of Game 4, a stunning collapse that makes the Spurs look all set to even the series at 2-2.
San Antonio had already changed the tone by winning Game 3 at MSG, behind another massive Victor Wembanyama performance and a level of physicality that left Knicks fans furious with the officiating.

Game 4 only pushed that momentum further. A 27-point halftime deficit at home in the Finals does more than damage one night; it tells oddsmakers that the Spurs have found control of the matchup.
That is why Portnoy’s disbelief and the betting movement can both make sense. The Knicks still have history on their side, but the Spurs have the live momentum, and in the middle of a blowout, the market stopped waiting for New York to recover.
