Watkins believes he is arriving at the World Cup in his best-ever form

Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins believes he is ‘the best he has ever been’ as the forward prepares for the World Cup.

The 30-year-old finished the club season in top form and was a critical figure for Villa, as they ended their 30-year wait for a major trophy. Unai Emery’s side claimed silverware after defeating Freiburg in the Europa League final.

“To come into the England camp off the back of a strong end to the season and winning a trophy, there’s nothing better,” insisted Watkins.

“I think everything that I had pictured and imagined has come into place. So yeah, I’m just very thankful I’ve been given this opportunity.

“But I’ve worked very hard for this, so I’m going to enjoy every moment.”

The striker continued: “I feel like physically I’m the best I’ve ever been and obviously my form as well in front of goal is really good at the moment. So yeah, I’m feeling really strong.

“Everyone’s got a part to play in this competition, whether it’s early stages, later stages. You just have to be ready at the end of the day and we’re all working together as a team to achieve something special.”

England are currently in Florida on a warmup camp ahead of the tournament. Much has been made of the conditions in the US, and the impact they could have on Thomas Tuchel’s side.

“It’s a struggle,” admitted Watkins on the heat. “First day, it’s a struggle, but it’s good. It’s going to get us prepared for it. And what better way than to be here in Miami?

“I played in the States with Villa for pre-season and the pitches were a lot different to the Premier League.

“But look, we’re world-class athletes at the end of the day, so we have to adapt. And yeah, I thought the pitch was good.”
