Vote for the Ivy Tech Journal & Courier Athlete of the Week (May 25-June 2)

Championship performances during high school's postseason have lifted teams to the next state of state tournaments.

The numbers that stand out the most are up for you to decide in an extended Ivy Tech Journal & Courier high school athlete of the week poll that encompasses May 25 through June 2.

Three area baseball teams made it through to regionals, two softball teams are on their way to semi-state, and several track and field athletes are competing in the state finals in Indianapolis.

Below are the nominees for Ivy Tech Journal & Courier high school athlete of the week.

Fans and readers can vote an unlimited amount of times until Sunday at noon. Winners will be announced on Monday morning.

Male athlete of the week nominees

Kamarion Ayres, McCutcheon, track and field: The senior won the 300-meter hurdles regional championship. Ayres did so posting the fastest regional time in the state in the event. He takes the No. 1 seed into the state finals with his regional time of 37.56 seconds.

Chase Gothrup, Harrison, baseball: The junior pitcher tossed a complete game in a sectional semifinal win over Lafayette Jeff. Gothrup allowed four hits and zero earned runs while striking out 15.

Owen Hudspith, Frankfort, track and field: The junior pole vaulter obliterated his personal best height when he cleared 16 feet to win the event in the Lafayette Jeff Regional.

Zac Wainscott, Rossville, baseball: Wainscott hit .714 during the Class 1A Carroll Sectional, helping lead the Hornets to their third sectional title in the past five seasons and first since 2023.

Female athlete of the week nominees

Kenzie Clark, Southmont, softball: Clark delivered three hits and drove in three runs during a 7-4 victory over Monrovia that gave the Mounties their second regional title in program history and first in 12 years.

Maria Jones, North Newton, softball: Jones' pitching led the Spartans to a repeat regional title. In a 4-1 victory over Kouts, Jones allowed just two hits over seven innings while striking out seven.

Makayla Ketterer, Harrison, track and field: Ketterer was the lone female in Greater Lafayette to win an individual regional title when she cleared 5-5 in the high jump to advance to the state finals.

Maddi Nevitt, Tri-County, softball: Nevitt closed a historic career with the Cavaliers as the program's all-time leader in strikeouts while also breaking records for strikeouts in a season and pitching wins.
