2027 College Football Playoff schedule shows why changes are needed

The 2026-2027 College Football Playoff schedule is now official. The schedule contains several details which have been discussed as possible areas for reform, but the sport just can't seem to move on these ideas. The CFP remains stuck in a bad schedule. This is not something which needs light tweaks. It requires an overhaul.

Problem number one

The first round of the 2026-2027 CFP is on the third weekend of December. The NFL will have multiple games on the Saturday of the first round. There is a law on the books which prohibits the NFL from playing on the first two Saturdays of December, but not the third or fourth. The CFP should have its opening round no later than the second Saturday of December to guarantee freedom from the NFL. Yet, the sport hasn't gotten that reform done yet. It's ridiculous that it has failed to move up the first round.

Two weeks between quarterfinals and semifinals

The semifinals were no more than 10 days after the quarterfinals in the past two editions of the CFP. The 2027 edition will have semifinals on January 14 and 15 after quarterfinals on December 30 and January 1. Why there has to be a two-week break between quarterfinals and semifinals is ridiculous.

Stop and start

With 12 teams in the CFP for this season, the top four teams will once again receive byes, as usual. Having a two-week break between quarterfinals and semifinals means those bye teams could then have two more weeks off before their next game. What's the point of having byes and an extended schedule? If anything, the semifinals should be closer to the quarterfinals in a more normal schedule. This is part of how college football can end the season sooner, not later.

Late title game, again

The 2027 CFP title game is on January 25. That's way too late. College football will basically crowd out college basketball, creating overlap which is avoidable, harmful and unnecessary. It's absurd that the season should end this late.

If the title game is going to be late, shift it to Saturday

In 2027, the NFL conference title games will be on Sunday, January 31. Again, college football should not have a title game so late in January, but if it's going to be late, why not simply move it to the Saturday night before NFL Conference Championship Sunday?

Move the regular season into early August

In order to no longer have a late-January title game, college football should just start its season a few weeks earlier. This will accommodate the early rounds of the playoffs, enabling them to be played in late November or early December, out of the NFL's reach. New Year's Day can be for the semifinals, and the season can end no later than January 15 every year.

Key point

Starting a season in early August doesn't mean more games; what it does mean is more off weeks, giving players more chances to rest since they already have to play at least three, if not four, CFP games to win the national championship.
