The Detroit Red Wings face a franchise-altering offseason after captain Dylan Larkin reportedly requested a trade. This development has brought an unprecedented uncertainty around Larkin’s future and raised major questions about the direction of the organization.
Larkin’s request comes after Detroit extended its playoff drought to 10 seasons, the longest active streak in the NHL. Despite posting another strong individual campaign with 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games, the 29-year-old is believed to be seeking a move to a Stanley Cup contender. Reports indicate that the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild and Vegas Golden Knights are among the teams on his approved trade list.

The development led to a strong response from Red Wings legend Darren McCarty, who questioned the decision while discussing the situation publicly.
“I automatically think about the guys that persevered,” McCarty said. “The guys in St. Louis. Barkov in Florida. That’s a great example. Ovi’s another one where it’s a leader of the team. So I don’t understand.”
McCarty also pointed to reported tensions between Larkin and management.
“So obviously, he’s got his reasons, but when you bring up the fact they haven’t talked in a year, and there’s contention and stuff like this,” McCarty said. “What do I always say? You’re either in or in the way. So you’re definitely in the way.”

Larkin’s frustration is understandable. Detroit appeared poised to end its playoff drought after sitting near the top of the Eastern Conference in January, only to suffer another late-season collapse. For a player entering his prime and carrying five years remaining on his contract, the desire to compete for a championship is hardly surprising.
However, McCarty’s comments reflect a belief shared by many former players: once a captain asks out, the relationship becomes difficult to repair.
“We can put blame on this and that or whatever like this, but I don’t want a guy, no matter if you’re the top guy or the bottom guy, if you don’t want to be here, I don’t want you here,” McCarty said. “This, I believe, will end up being one of the best things to happen to the Red Wing organization.”

If Larkin is ultimately moved, general manager Steve Yzerman faces one of the most important decisions of his tenure. Detroit would lose its top center and emotional leader, but a major trade package could accelerate a roster reset built around Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat and the club’s growing prospect pool.
Whether McCarty is right will depend entirely on what comes next.
