The city is trying to protect the energy around the Knicks’ first NBA Finals run in decades without allowing the celebration to turn into another unsafe scene.

Game 3 created that problem after the Spurs’ 115-111 win at Madison Square Garden. Videos and reports of postgame chaos made it impossible for officials to treat the next public gathering like a normal watch party.

Zohran Mamdani on X announced that the city had approved a ticketed watch party outside Madison Square Garden for Game 4.

“We’re back outside the Garden. We have approved a ticketed MSG watch party for Game 4. More details soon.

“As we prepare to watch together, let me be clear: this is a historic, joyful moment for our city,” Mamdani tweeted.

He added, “We will not allow it to be disrupted by violence. Be safe, take care, and celebrate responsibly. Knicks in 5.”

The key word is ticketed. After the issues around Game 3, the city is leaning toward a smaller and more controlled setup rather than another wide-open crowd that becomes harder to manage.

Mamdani’s message also made clear that he still wants the city to celebrate. The Knicks remain up 2-1 in the NBA Finals, and Game 4 is another chance for New York to move closer to ending its long title wait.

The decision came after troubling scenes followed the Knicks’ Game 3 loss, with Spurs fans reportedly targeted by some New York supporters in the streets and around watch-party areas.

Reports described Spurs jerseys being ripped, visiting fans being harassed or attacked, and disorder near Bryant Park after thousands gathered for the game. Police also dealt with arrests and injured officers as the night turned chaotic.

That is why the Game 4 plan matters. A ticketed watch party gives officials more control over entry, crowd size, and security, while still allowing Knicks fans to gather outside the Garden.

Mamdani’s warning was not aimed at the entire fanbase, but at the people who turned a basketball loss into violence. New York can still have its Finals moment, but the city is making it clear that Spurs fans cannot become targets for wearing the wrong jersey.
