Executive Jameer Nelson gives his thoughts on Sixers star Tyrese Maxey

CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers are entering a new era in the front office with Mike Gansey taking over as the team's President of Basketball Operations. He takes over the job from Daryl Morey, who held the position for six seasons before he and the Sixers parted ways.

Alongside Gansey will be Jameer Nelson who has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations as he will be serving as No. 2 to Gansey. An All-Star during his playing days and a native of Chester, PA, Nelson is ready for the next phase of his career as he looks to move forward.

The Sixers will be leaning on rising star Tyrese Maxey to take Philadelphia to the next level. An All-Star starter in 2025-26, Maxey averaged 28.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds as he helped guide Philadelphia to a 45-37 record and a Round 1 upset over the Boston Celtics before the sweep by the New York Knicks.

"First and foremost, he's an incredible person," said Nelson of Maxey. "So, that's where it starts, and I think if you look at it, he's a guy who was drafted, I'm not sure what, 20, 21, somewhere around there. So, we got lucky. We got lucky with the person. We got lucky with the player, and one of the coolest things to see is how he gets better every year."

To Nelson's point, Maxey was the No. 21 pick in the 2020 NBA draft and has taken big leaps in each and every one of his six years in the league thus far. He has dispelled the notion that he will struggle with his 3-point shot, he has taken steps forward defensively, and he has improved as a playmaker. There is no doubt that he will be even better in the 2026-27 season as he continues to lead this Sixers team.

"We can talk about the numbers and stats and things like that, but his mindset is different every year to come back better," Nelson finished. "He lives by 1% better every day, and I know that's a little cliche, but it's real. That's the thing he works on. He works his tail off every day to accomplish that 1%."
