Dallas Goedert details offseason decision to stay with Eagles

Dallas Goedert had a chance to consider life outside Philadelphia, but the veteran tight end never found a better situation than the one he already had with the Eagles.

Goedert said he was able to test free agency "a little bit" during the offseason and had opportunities to go elsewhere, but ultimately decided that returning to Philadelphia was the best move for his career. The decision keeps one of Jalen Hurts' most trusted targets in place as the Eagles reshape their offense after A.J. Brown's departure and transition into Sean Mannion's system.

“I was able to test free agency a little bit,” Goedert said. “Had opportunities to go elsewhere. Nothing was a better opportunity than I thought I could have here. Being able to play in the same place for nine years is special. It would have had to be something really drastic to have me try to sign somewhere else.”

Goedert's comments reflect both loyalty and practicality. He has spent his entire career in Philadelphia, developing from a second-round pick into one of the NFL's more complete tight ends. Remaining with the Eagles gives him continuity with Hurts, a familiar locker room, and a chance to play a major role in an offense that could lean more heavily on tight ends.

That role may become even more important in 2026. Brown is no longer on the roster, making DeVonta Smith the clear No. 1 wide receiver and creating more opportunity for Goedert, Makai Lemon, Hollywood Brown, Dontayvion Wicks, Elijah Moore, and others. Goedert has already praised Mannion's system for creating "easy touches" for tight ends and scheming ways to get players open in space, while also emphasizing that tight ends must be able to block in the new offense.

For Philadelphia, retaining Goedert was about more than keeping a productive pass catcher. He remains a physical blocker, a reliable middle-of-the-field option, and one of the longest-tenured players on the roster. His presence gives the Eagles stability during an offseason defined by change.

Goedert acknowledged that leaving would have required something significant, and that says plenty about how he views Philadelphia. After eight seasons with the organization, the chance to enter Year 9 with the same franchise still carried value.
