Klopp backs Wirtz despite mixed debut campaign at Liverpool

Difficult season offered valuable lessons

When Wirtz completed his move to Liverpool in the summer of 2025, excitement levels were understandably high. The attacking midfielder arrived with a reputation built on outstanding performances in the Bundesliga and was expected to transform Liverpool’s creativity.

However, adapting to the Premier League is rarely straightforward, even for elite talents.

Liverpool endured an inconsistent campaign, and Wirtz found himself under the microscope throughout much of the season. Injuries disrupted his rhythm at key moments, while questions were occasionally raised about whether he was producing enough goals and assists to justify his status.

Across all competitions, Wirtz made 49 appearances during the 2025/26 season. He contributed seven goals and ten assists, although his Premier League return stood at five goals and four assists.

Those numbers fell short of what many anticipated from a player carrying such a significant transfer fee. Nevertheless, statistics rarely tell the entire story of a footballer’s development, particularly during their first season in a new league and environment.

Klopp sees qualities others may overlook

Klopp’s assessment focused less on raw numbers and more on the attributes that convinced Liverpool to invest so heavily in Wirtz.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Klopp said:

“I think he has everything you need to be a standout player. I don’t want to put any pressure on the boy, stuff like that.

“Unlucky with injuries, besides that, I really think he showed already how good he can be in a difficult season, we all know that.”

Those comments reflect Klopp’s long-standing belief in player development. Throughout his managerial career, he repeatedly demonstrated patience with young talents, often backing them through difficult periods before they eventually flourished.

For Klopp, Wirtz’s first season should be viewed through the lens of adaptation rather than immediate output.

Growth remains central to Liverpool plans

There is also encouragement in the fact that Liverpool’s coaching staff have consistently highlighted Wirtz’s progress behind the scenes.

The midfielder remains only 23 years old and is entering a stage of his career where significant development can still occur. Many elite midfielders reach their peak years between the ages of 25 and 28, leaving Liverpool optimistic that Wirtz’s best football is still ahead of him.

His technical ability, intelligence in possession and capacity to unlock compact defences continue to make him one of the most gifted players in Liverpool’s squad.

While supporters naturally focus on goals and assists, coaches often value broader contributions. Wirtz’s movement between the lines, pressing intensity and ability to create space for team-mates have all been viewed positively within the club.

Opportunity awaits in second season

Liverpool’s expectations will inevitably rise as Wirtz prepares for his second campaign at Anfield. The adjustment period has largely passed, and supporters will expect a more decisive influence in key matches.

Yet Klopp’s verdict serves as a reminder that elite careers are rarely defined by one season.

The former Liverpool manager believes Wirtz has already demonstrated enough to justify confidence in his future. Injuries and adaptation challenges may have slowed his progress, but the underlying talent remains undeniable.

For Liverpool, the hope is that the coming season allows Wirtz to translate potential into consistent production. If Klopp’s judgement proves accurate, the difficult moments of his debut campaign may ultimately be remembered as necessary steps in the journey towards becoming one of the Premier League’s standout performers.
