Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 2025–26 season with the Milwaukee Bucks was a disaster by any standard. They finished 32–50, snapped a nine-year playoff streak and spent half the year managing reports of a locker-room rift between the front office and their franchise cornerstone.
Amid growing rumors of a potential exit, the Miami Heat have emerged as the frontrunners to acquire the 10-time All-Star. But the Boston Celtics’ name keeps getting thrown into the mix but it is not helping them much.

According to Sam Amick and Eric Nehm of The Athletic, there are clear indications that Giannis is “very intrigued” by the idea of getting traded to Boston, drawn in part by their roster depth and championship infrastructure.

On paper, it reads like a real threat to Miami’s lead. In practice, the math doesn’t work and the Celtics’ own hesitation to trade Jaylen Brown is exactly what’s making Antetokounmpo’s preferred destination increasingly obvious.
Brian Windhorst says Giannis Antetokounmpo leans toward joining Heat culture
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has been the clearest voice on where this is actually heading. On ESPN’s Get Up, Windhorst made it clear what the 31-year-old is interested in

He said, “The team to watch here is Miami. Miami would say ‘we got Tyler Herro who is a young player and been an All Star. We got draft picks including the 13th pick in this draft… And Giannis I think wants to be in Miami. There’s more check marks on Miami. I’m not sure Boston is ready to trade Jaylen Brown.”
Boston cannot get Antetokounmpo without trading Brown. Just to recap, Giannis reportedly favors Boston because of its deep roster, championship culture, and his immense respect for head coach Joe Mazzulla. He reportedly views Boston as a place where he can immediately contend for titles.
But it would require Boston to trade away their All-Star to match salaries. And according to Windhorst, they do not want to do that. In fact, by late May, the Celtics and Bucks had not even spoken.

Miami’s actual trade package is built around Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and up to three first-round picks (including No. 13). This is reportedly the best offer that drove serious discussions back in February. It gives Milwaukee what they want, such as young talent and draft capital. Boston simply cannot match that value without including Brown.
And if Windhorst is correct about what Antetokounmpo wants, then he is heading toward join Heat culture sooner than later.
