After nearly a decade with the Maple Leafs, Marner was shipped south to Las Vegas to join the Golden Knights last June. He signed a maximum eight-year contract and locked up his future with the team.

Marner was always one of the premier offensive threats on the Maple Leafs, particularly in terms of his passing abilities. He was able to deliver frequent assists during the playoffs with Toronto, but rarely maintained a top-notch shooting efficiency.

While the Leafs made the playoffs every season with Marner, his low counting numbers were mainly a result of small sample size, with Toronto struggling in the playoffs. In Marner's time with the team, they held a record of 2-9 in playoff series.

Despite the lack of a deep run, Marner still sits quite high on many playoff record leaderboards in Toronto. He's fifth in all-time playoff points in Leafs history. He is also the only member of the top five to play for the team since 2009.

Why did Mitch Marner leave Maple Leafs?

Marner was traded from Toronto to Vegas last June, just hours before he was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

After clarifying that he was determined to test free agency, the Maple Leafs traded him in one of the NHL's more unique free agency quirks. At the time, as a pending free agent, a player's current team could sign them to a contract with a maximum of eight years. This is now seven under the league's new CBA.

Had the Golden Knights tried to sign Marner as an unrestricted free agent, they would have been limited to a maximum contract of seven years. By performing this trade shortly before free agency began, the Knights were able to secure an extra year on Marner's deal.
