Jack Dreyer Returns from IL, Paul Gervase Optioned

The Los Angeles Dodgers shuffled their bullpen ahead of the final game of a three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Left-hander Jack Dreyer returned from the injured list after going down with shoulder discomfort a couple of weeks ago, and right-hander Paul Gervase, who came up at the same time, returned to Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers’ bullpen fared well without Dreyer for the first week or so he had been out, but they’ll be happy to see him back after their late-inning meltdown on Saturday. Dreyer had been one of the Dodgers’ best performing relievers before his injury, posting a 2.08 ERA through 21.2 innings.

The southpaw has struck out 24 batters on the year, has a WHIP below 1.000 and has only allowed five earned runs.

LA also used both of their left-handed arms—Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia—in Saturday’s loss, so Dreyer is likely to feature against a lefty-heavy Phillies lineup

How Did Paul Gervase Perform in MLB?

Gervase only came into one game after the Dodgers called him up May 17, pitching two scoreless innings against the Milwaukee Brewers and only allowing two baserunners. That isn’t his only appearance of the year, though, as he also pitched in long relief when the Dodgers called him up towards the beginning of the month.

He threw three innings against the Atlanta Braves, allowing just one run through three innings and striking out five batters in the process.

The Dodgers have plenty of right-handed arms at the moment, though, so despite his solid long relief efforts in MLB so far this season, Gervase drew the short straw.

How Has the Dodgers’ Series Against the Phillies Unfolded?

The Dodgers won the opening game of the three-game NLDS rematch against the Phillies on Friday, holding the visitors to just two runs while scoring four of their own behind a strong Justin Wrobleski start.

Saturday’s game appeared to be going just as well, as the Dodgers ended the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead, but a quick RBI single and a two-run homer gave the Phillies a 4-3 lead, which they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.

The Dodgers sit 4.5 games clear at the top of the NL West heading into Sunday’s game, and will look to extend their commanding lead even further with a fifth consecutive series win.
