Dave Roberts Provides Update on Shohei Ohtani’s Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke about Shohei Ohtani’s knee injury, which led to him leaving Thursday, June 11’s, game vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Roberts said that Ohtani possibly injured his left leg when trying to steal a base during the game, though he did make it clear that he was not sure about what led to it.

The skipper said his level of concern is “not high” despite pulling him early from the game and feels good about Ohtani being back in the lineup on Friday and feels really good about him making his next pitching start.

The Dodgers announced that Ohtani left the game with left knee inflammation, though Roberts said that he thought it was more of a hamstring injury.

The hamstring area lies behind the knee, so if the pain is behind the knee, it would make sense that the hamstring is the injured part, not necessarily the knee.

“I think that we try to be smart about it and talk to the trainer, and said he had a little pain behind the knee and a little hamstring,” Roberts said.

“We just wanted to be smart and not push it. I feel good about him being in there tomorrow, but obviously, with the travel tonight, we’ll just kind of see how he comes in.”

With regard to his pitching, Roberts was relieved that it was only the landing leg rather than the push-off leg.

“You could argue that it’s better the landing leg versus the push off,” Roberts said. “Obviously, he hasn’t tried to pitch.

“Tomorrow, he’ll get there, do his routine, play catch, push off, or land on it, see how it reacts, and then obviously take swings and then see how that reacts too.”

Ohtani’s injury comes at a bad time as he was just starting to figure things out on both ends of the field. His pitching has been elite all year, and his hitting was starting to catch up quickly, with home runs coming fast and furious.
