Could Lamar Jackson wait on a contract extension as QB market rises?

The Baltimore Ravens would like to secure Lamar Jackson with another contract extension, but significant progress has yet to materialize as the quarterback market continues to evolve. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Baltimore remains interested in extending Jackson, who is under contract through the 2027 season and scheduled to become a free agent in 2028. However, Fowler reported that no major progress has been made on a new deal, and some around the league believe Jackson could be motivated to wait until next offseason before revisiting negotiations.

The strategy would make sense from a financial perspective for the two-time MVP. Quarterback salaries have continued to climb at a rapid pace since Jackson passed Jalen Hurts for the highest-paid player, with every new contract seemingly resetting the market. If Jackson delays extension talks, he could benefit from a new wave of quarterback contracts expected during the 2027 offseason.

Among the notable quarterbacks who could become eligible for extensions are Drake Maye of the Patriots, Caleb Williams of the Bears, and Jayden Daniels of the Commanders. Any lucrative deals signed by that trio could further elevate the top of the quarterback market and strengthen Jackson's negotiating position.

Jackson has already proven willing to bet on himself, forgoing signing with an agent, and instead teaming with his mother to handle business. During his previous contract negotiations, the two-time NFL MVP played without a long-term extension before eventually agreeing to a record-setting deal with Baltimore in 2023.

The Ravens have every reason to want clarity sooner rather than later. Jackson remains the face of the franchise and is coming off another productive season as Baltimore continues its pursuit of a Super Bowl championship. For now, there appears to be little urgency from either side. Jackson is under contract for two more seasons, while the Ravens maintain flexibility as they manage a roster built to contend annually.

Still, Fowler's report highlights a situation worth monitoring. If the quarterback market rises again next offseason, Jackson could find himself in a position to command another historic payday.
