Later this year, the uniforms for the upcoming WNBA All-Star Game will feature special “USA 250” patches in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. However, one WNBA superstar does not think that it’s appropriate for the league to be celebrating the occasion.
In a series of social media posts this week, Las Vegas Aces star forward Brianna Turner spoke out against the idea of the players wearing the special patches to honor America’s 250th birthday due to the country’s history with slavery.

Turner, who is a prominent WNBA star and currently serves as the treasurer of the WNBA Players’ Association, criticized the idea that WNBA All-Stars should wear the “USA 250” patch on their jerseys for the WNBA All-Star Game.
The Aces star claimed that most of the players in the WNBA and the “vast majority” of people in America today would not have been “free” 250 years ago.
“The irony of all the USA 250 stuff is that the vast majority of people in America today would not have been “free” 250 years ago,” Turner wrote in a post on X. “Whoever called for the WNBA all star uniforms to have the USA 250 patch should have thought that through considering no WNBA players would have been free 250 years ago. The majority wouldn’t even have their freedom 100 years ago.”

“We are some of the most elite female athletes,” Turner added in a follow-up post. “250 years ago we would have been breeders or in the fields working all day. Be so serious rn.”
Turner went on to concede that the decision to wear the patches was probably a financial move.
“Yesss I know this was probably a financial decision at the end of the day but still,” she added.
It’s worth noting that the WNBA has not confirmed that it will wear the patches.
While Sportico reported Thursday that the WNBA would have its All-Stars wear the patches during July 24-26 festivities in Chicago, the league said that “nothing has been finalized at this time.”

“Like other major sports leagues, we are exploring how best to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary,” the WNBA said in a statement to USA Today. “Nothing has been finalized at this time.”
Turner is a Women’s Basketball Star
Turner has had quite a successful basketball career across her time at both the college level and the professional ranks. During her time with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the college level, Turner was an NCAA Champion, a two-time All-American, and a three-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
At the professional level, Turner has been named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team two times in her young career and won the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup as a member of the Indiana Fever.

Additionally, Turner has represented the United States at the international level, competing for the United States women’s national basketball team at the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Championship, 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, and 2014 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship.[13]
