99 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1999 season

We can officially commence the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Saturday, June 6 is 99 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 99 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1999 season for the Cardinals.

A look back at the 1999 season for the Cardinals

This was a terribly disappointing season. Coming off their first playoff appearance since moving to Arizona and a playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Cardinals changed the roster. Tackle Lomas Brown, fullback Larry Centers and linebacker Jamir Miller all left.

They went 6-10. Quarterback Jake Plummer had an awful season. They did win four straight games to get to 6-6 only to lose the final four games of the season.

They were awful on offense, averaging 15.3 points per game, and on defense, giving up 23.9 per game.

1999 offensive leaders

Plummer started 11 games in 1999. He threw only nine touchdown passes and had a league-leading 24 interceptions, completing 52.8% of his passes. Dave Brown started the other five games and had two touchdown passes and six picks.

Adrian Murrell led the team with 593 rushing yards, but he averaged 2.9 yards per attempt. He did not score a touchdown. Michael Pittman rushed for 289 yards and two scores.

Frank Sanders was the leading receiver with 79 catches for 954 yards but only one touchdown. Rob Moore had five touchdown catches.

1999 defensive leaders

Simeon Rice was a bright spot with 16.5 sacks. Eric Swann was next with four, but he played in only nine games.

Linebacker Ronald McKinnon led the team with 143 total tackles, followed by linebacker Rob Fredrickson with 125 and safety Kwamie Lassitter with 114.

Five different players led with two interceptions.
